SATURDAY TURNED out to be a big day for ABVP (Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad) student leaders as they swept three out of four seats in DUSU (Delhi University Student's Union) election by claiming the posts of president, vice president and secretary. The main rival party, NSUI (National Student's Union Of India) had to be content with the post of joint secretary.

Jitender Chaudhary, Neetu Dabas and Priya Dabas wre the winners from ABVP for posts of president, vice president and secretary respectively while Akshay Kumar of NSUI won the post of joint secretary.

This year's polling was a letdown as a mere 35 per cent of the total eligible voters turned out to vote. The persistent rains and strict guidelines marred the whole election campaign and it didn't occur to be the 'usual' power show of yesteryears.

The DUSU elections cover a total of 51 colleges under Delhi University and this year a total of 41 candidates were in fray for the four posts of president, vice president, secretary and joint secretary. The elections started early in the morning and ended at 7 pm.

Chief Returning Officer J M Khurana said that this year's voting percentage of 35% was a dubious record which was earlier associated with last year's elections. Last year an estimated 37 percent of voters turned out to vote.

A total of 943 EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) were used for the elections. 130 centres were set for the DUSU panel elections whereas a total of 111 centres were in place for the college elections.

Eleven candidates were fighting for the post of the DUSU president whereas 30 others were pitted for the remaining three positions.

There have been some complaints of some bigger parties using 'power and money' during campaigns. Chief Election Officer Gurmeet Singh confirmed that the office has received some complaints and they will be thoroughly examined.
