The Indira Gandhi National Open University's (IGNOU's) School of Performing and Visual Arts (SOPVA) has started a four day workshop, starting from today, for the inmates of Tihar jail. The workshop aims at exposing the inmates to various art forms by the teachers and students associated with painting, music and theatre of the school.
The workshop focuses on the basics of arts and provides a firsthand experience in painting, music and theatre arts to the inmates. The workshop in painting and theatre is being conducted for a group of male inmates and music for female inmates.
The Director of SOPVA, Prof. Sunil Kumar has stated that during this four day workshop the inmates would not only be introduced to the Fine arts like Painting, Music and Theatre but will be given a chance to actively participate in the activities and produce their own work of art. Further, this exposure may also be helpful for the inmates to opt this as profession and mode of expression through arts of their choice later on.
At the end of this workshop music and play presentation shall be made by the trained inmates on the basis of what they have learnt and an exhibition of paintings made by them shall also be organized.
Pro Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, Prof. Pravin Sinclair praised the concept of this workshop being conducted by SOPVA and said that this is a unique concept to train inmates in different streams of arts. She informed that this concept of training inmates in arts will not be confined to this jail only but similar activities may be conducted at other jails as well.
