Last batch of Ford fellowships on offer
The Ford Foundation International Fellowships Programme (IFP) is inviting applications for its last batch of awards. Deadline for pre-applications is December 15, 2009.
Forty fellowships are on offer for Indian candidates living and working in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a recognised Indian university with at least 55 per cent marks. They must have at least three years’ full-time work experience relevant to their proposed area of study. They should also have experience in leadership and community service or development-related activities. They should have experienced some socio-economic disadvantage in their access to quality higher education.
IFP will help the fellows in university admission process, and will pay for travel, tuition fees, living costs and logistical arrangements related to their study programmes.
Launched in 2001, IFP is meant to build a new generation of social justice leaders in India and certain other regions by offering an opportunity for quality higher education.
As of October 2009, IFP India has selected 280 fellows for Master’s and PhD programmes.
There will be four stages of selection. In the first two, experts will assess applications. The next two rounds will be regional and national interviews.
Vivek Mansukhani, director, Ford Foundation IFP in India, says, “(The year) 2010 will be the last year that we select IFP fellows. We hope candidates with the potential to become social justice leaders will avail of this opportunity to obtain a Master’s degree from an international or Indian university, and then use their expertise to tackle pressing problems and contribute to society.”
