Positive Side

  • Pharmaceutical Company, Cipla, has launched a drug like "Virenza" to tackle swine flu. Virenza is meant to treat uncomplicated acute illness caused due to Infuenza A&B virus but is priced much above the other drugs (Influenzum 200, etc) in this category. It has positioned itself as a Swine flu drug and is cashing in on the hype. Other pharmaceutical companies are in process of drenching themselves in the money dripping monsoon.
  • Private Hospitals (Apollo, Woodlands, etc) to benefit from a sudden rush in of suspected flu patients whose treatment is simply isolation, but a premium is being charged by these hospitals as they leverage on the fact of beds unavailibility.

Negetive Side

  • Government borrowing to increase as it needs more money to put in the "Health & Family Welfare Scheme" and to build up resources (more hospital with more beds) to tackle any kind of a future pandemic. This will increase interest rates and crowd out private investments in the capital market.
  • Tourism & Hospitality industry will be severely affected for a short to medium term till the affected areas are satisfactorily sterilised.
  • Travel industry will make short term gains as people from affected areas (Pune, Mumbai, etc) rush to safer places, booking tickets at exorbitant price. While in the medium term people will avoid these areas for business & leisure travel.

My conclusions may be far-fetched, so please add your valuable comments for the benefit of us all.
