Investment banks such as Merrill Lynch of the US, which had skipped placements at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) last year, returned to the institute on Saturday when IIMA launched its cohort-based placement system.

The First Cluster had companies from four cohorts โ€” international investment banks, global strategy consulting, global niche consulting and private equity/ venture capital.

While the institute has not revealed the total number of jobs offered, it has confirmed that almost all recruiters had made more offers than last year.

Regular recruiters such as Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and McKinsey & Co made eight offers each. This included pre-placement offers.

BCG recruiters were all praise for the new placement system. โ€œWe are very happy with the new process,โ€ a recruiter said. โ€œWe were able to select excellent candidates.โ€ The students, too, are happy with the new system. They said they had been able to make better choices.

IIMAโ€™s placement faculty coordinator, Prof Saral Mukherjee, said that as this is the first time that the cohort-based system is being introduced at the institute, they were somewhat apprehensive.

โ€œBut as the day progressed, the relaxed atmosphere in and around the interview rooms were a pointer that we had moved in the right
direction,โ€ Prof Mukherjee. โ€œThe recruiters have expressed satisfaction with the new process and students, too, have interviewed with the firms of their choice.โ€

In the new process, companies that offer similar roles, profiles, salaries, locations, etc. are grouped into individual cohorts. Several cohorts comprise a Cluster. The new cohort-based placement process has been introduced this year.
