Mystory@Sravanti Vedula: How I chose my course and college
I wanted to be in technical field, therefore I chose Math and Science subjects in my Intermediate. I went on to do Computer Science Engineering at VBIT since I am quite tech savvy and I like to be updated about technology on a regular basis. Besides being a tech geek, I always had immense interest towards management sciences as well. We had one management subject in each semester of engineering and so it gave an insight about the importance of management studies and the role it plays in an organisation. It helped me identify my interest and also guided me through the course to take up in post-graduation.
I initially wanted to get into management jobs without pursuing MBA, but later on I realised how important a post-graduation in Management studies can be keeping the future in mind. I got to know about Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE), Hyderabad, through one of my family friends and I chose PGDM (General) because I was quite excited about the opportunity of specialising in two cohorts and not just one. I have opted for IPE because it offers dual specialisation.
How I cracked college admission
I got to know about IPE through one of my family friend who was already pursuing her PGDM in the college. Her inputs actually helped me a lot in understanding the expectations of IPE. I wanted to pursue MBA at Hyderabad and IPE was the only best choice that was available. I got to hear great things about IPE from its alumni as well. The alumni included some of my neighbours and colony friends. It was very endearing to see alumni as old as 20-25 years also speaking about IPE to me with so much passion. So, since I was very particular about the location, I was very particular about admission in IPE only.
Any national level management entrance exam is considered for admission into IPE. I wrote CAT and I gave my interview at IPE in the month of May, and I was informed that I have been shortlisted. I have taken CAT coaching from Time Institute and it helped me clear the cut-off required for getting shortlisted for IPE. Besides CAT, I also wrote ICET for Admissions in the local colleges. There are quite a good number of colleges in the city providing you PGDM course (only universities offer MBA), but none like IPE. IPE is very student friendly and is very flexible where you have the best support from the professors for one’s overall development.
What I gained from my college experience
I spend my time in college mostly attending classes because one thing IPE can boast about is the excellent faculty it has. Every teaching in the class has added value to my knowledge and learning. Interactions with the professors of IPE has broadened my horizon about opportunities available in the industry and real time challenges faced in the organisation. Every professor has something unique to deliver. I was inspired by one of my faculty to be a part of Startupedia, an annual B-Plan pitch for showcasing business Ideas. I have worked as the core team member with five other team members for more than two months to make the event a success. The interaction with resourceful persons and industrialists pushed us to do things that are unconventional and out of the box. Besides working as core team member of Startupedia, I am also the SIP coordinator for my section. This particular responsibility which I took up to represent the SIP cell on behalf of my section has been the greatest challenge. I am an aspiring HR professional and my position of responsibility as SIP coordinator is helping me immensely to get in touch with the HRs from various industries and observe their work closely.
IPE helped me change my perceptions about the opportunities available in every sector of the industry and how each role and each vertical in an organisation is important. It helped me gain clarity and decide regarding which field to choose and the real-time opportunities available without any misconceptions and misinterpretations.
I am residing at the hostel which has changed me as a person in many ways. I am more mature and flexible now than I was before. I learnt the art of pleasing people, dealing with crisis situations and how to adjust and make the best use of the limited resources available. The hostel experience is helping me prioritise things and make the best use of every small opportunity available both professionally and personally. Professionally, because I am getting to stay with seniors and students coming from various backgrounds. Hence, it is expanding my network which is very important as a management student. Personally, staying at the hostel is helping me adjust to different environments, different mindsets and cope up with everybody’s expectations.
The college is very flexible and student friendly where more emphasis is on the overall development of the student and not just his/her academics. IPE is a great place to learn and execute your learnings provided you make the best use of the facilities that are made available.
