Not to hike the fee: says HRD Minister Kapil Sibal
The announcement to hike the fee by IIMs is not welcomed by candidates and even by the ministers too. The ministers and government too is surprised over this issue. The ministers felt that if the government is allocating the funds for their smooth functions of day-to day
routine work and for all other major projects too, then this kind of announcement of fee hike is not appreciatable at all. Every year lakhs of candidates apply for IIMs and only lucky few got chance to study in the Mecca of B-Schools.
IIMs are rated as top B-Schools of the country and hike in the fee and making is almost double from the present fee is the topic of concern for all. Paying 5 lakhs or 10 lakhs for a post graduate program is not easy thing for all to manage to pay such a huge amount. The fees in all the IIM's is quite high if we compare them with other institutes and hike in the present fee will make the situation more complicated for many students.
Understanding the importance of the issue Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal has asked the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) not to hike the fees. While interacting with the Chairman of the board of directors of the nine IIMs, Sibal said that the fee for the IIMs' flagship Post-Graduate Management Programme hurt the students coming from middle class families. IIM-Ahmedabad, the top ranked of the nine IIMs, has hiked the fee sharply for the two-year course, from Rs 1.25 million to Rs 1.37 million.
The fee was hiked after the IIMs raised the intake, due to implementation of the Other Backward Class (OBC) quota. This implementation of OBC seats was done on the directives of the Supreme Court. But, this should not affect the fees of the course as they are getting the funds from the government for their functionaries.
