Producing industry captains

The distinct feature of studying at the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), under Delhi University, is the great value for money it offers students. Nowhere else in the country can one study MBA — and earn a degree, not a diploma — for just Rs 10,000 a year. And this low-cost, high-quality education can fetch you an average yearly pay package of Rs 15 lakh during campus placement.

No wonder, thousands of students from across the country vie for the 241 FMS seats, spread over its north and south campuses. Such is its reputation that sometimes a student will prefer it to an Indian Institute of Management. Zeb Azam, a first-year student at the North Campus centre, is one such student. “I had got a call from one of the IIMs, but the fee at FMS is so much lower,” says Azam. “Moreover, it’s in Delhi. So, I joined FMS.” The school’s North Campus centre runs a regular MBA programme, while the South Campus is known for its MBA in management of services, which trains future managers for financial services, health care, hospitality, transportation services etc.    Famous for: Its placement record, which is normally 100 per cent, Delhi University’s patronage, and a long list of alumni who are placed in the top rungs of industry, e.g. Manoj Kohli, CEO and MD of Bharti (Airtel); Ravi Kiran, CEO-South Asia; SMV group, and R Mukundan, MD of Tata Chemicals.

Extra-curricular activities: FMS has a cultural society that has dance, music and dramatic groups. They showcased their talent at a cultural night held in December.

“In this (academic) session, we introduced a cultural event, Celebrer, as a part of our management festival, Fiesta. Our students regularly participate in fests at IIM Lucknow, Calcutta and Ahmedabad,” says Abhishek Sudhakar, cultural secretary, FMS, who is also a certified salsa instructor.

Infrastructure: The main FMS library is at the North Campus. It has reading rooms with over 50,000 books and over a hundred journals. A branch library functions at SP Jain Advanced Management Research Centre, South Campus. Both the libraries are well stocked with textbooks, reference books and other documents. Along with this, the students have access to the Ratan Tata Library.

The SP Jain Advanced Management Research Centre was established in 1982 to promote management research, education and training of managers, executives and academicians.

Found on campus: “We are not only given good managerial training by the faculty, but there’s good industry interaction, too. Almost every week, some industry professional delivers a lecture on the campus. Yesterday, someone from Aviva Life Insurance visited. These industry people select interested students who are made to work on live projects in that industry,” says Azam.
