Opening Day Of Online CAT Ended In A Mess
On Nov 28, computer break down in unspecified number of centers in six cities spoiled the start of the Common Admission Test (CAT). The crash occurred during the very first day of the CAT examination in Chennai, Kolkata, Bhopal, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune. It is going to affect a large number of students who are set to appear in the test until Dec 7. Mr.Ulhas Vairagkar, director of the TIME institute, a preparatory school for IIM aspirants said, "We got calls from students in six cities saying they were not able to give the test because the computer system crashed. The students have been told they can take another time slot.

A Controversial Faculty Quota Introduced By IIT, Kharagpur
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur has introduced a controversial faculty quota as ordered by the human resource development (HRD) ministry. This quota has been introduced only at the entry level of science and technology streams. The ministry has asked IITs to put down 15 percent quota for Scheduled Caste (SC), 7.5 percent for Scheduled Tribe (ST) and 27 percent quota for other backward classes candidates (OBC) in teaching positions. But the oldest IIT of the country does not want to compromise on the quality of faculty. In a circular, IIT, Kharagpur has invited application from "Indian nationals, possessing excellent background, commitment to quality teaching and potential for carrying out outstanding research". "Without any compromise on qualification, experience, and competence, reservation as per government of India rules is available only at entry level positions of assistant professors," it said.

Delhi To Sign MoU With New York Academy of Sciences
The Delhi Government is planning to ink a deal with the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) in an effort to upgrade education and research in the field of science and technology. Delhi Chief Minister, Ms Sheila Dikshit said,"In view of the need of collaboration in the field of science and engineering research and education, it has been decided to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the New York Academy of Sciences and the Delhi Knowledge Development Foundation (DKDF)".

Candidates Demand Paper-Based Re-Test for CAT
A recent survey of people taking the CAT examination this year indicated that about 65 per cent of the respondents wanted a pen-and-paper re-test for all aspirants who have registered for CAT 2009. Candidates who faced problems during CAT 2009 are planning to send a petition to the CAT examination conveyor as well as the directors of the seven IIMs, requesting them to hold a paper-based re-test for this year.

Indian Students Affected As Two Australian Colleges Close
Recently, a media report said that scores of Indian students in Australia have been exposed to an uncertain future as two more colleges here have been shut down by the state regulator. The Australian Institute of Career Education and the Australian International College of Commerce were closed by the Victorian Registration and Qualification Authority (VRQA) as they failed to meet the "most basic education standards". The colleges were, according to The Age, closed down as they had "inadequate learning materials" and lacked basic kitchen facilities to teach their cookery students.

Migrating To Delhi University (DU) Not Possible Anymore
Students of Delhi University (DU) with lower scores in the plus two examinations are forced to take admissions in its open school. But there are students who aspire to continue their studies from a regular college and they study hard in their first year to score well and migrate to a regular college. Unfortunately, this would not be possible now.. The last date to apply for migration into regular colleges was October 16 but results of the students were declared on October 20. They feel that the university had deliberately delayed their results to keep them away from migrating to regular colleges.
