Last Chance For 44 Deemed Varsities To Retain Their Status
Before stripping 44 universities of their deemed status, the Centre determined to issue notices to these universities before taking a final call. Taking heed to a petition filed by a lawyer Mr. Viplav Sharma in Supreme Court who challenged the decision to withdraw deemed status of 44 universities, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry said that two independent panels set up by it had found "aberrations" in their functioning. The committee report proves that these universities are violating the norms and guidelines prescribed by the ministry for teaching and research.

Mumbai University Accreditation Status Still Not Renewed
After three years laps in accreditation renewal, Mumbai University still needs three months more to renew the status. According to a norm, all educational institutions are required to get themselves re-accredited after every five years. Mumbai University is yet to get its second re-accreditation.University officials are trying to put all the blame on the Board of College and University Development (BCUD). They feel that it is responsible for quality assurance. A senior faculty member said, "The BCUD is completely ignoring its responsibility. It lacks interest and has simply sat over the issue for years."

Most Awaited CAT 2009 Result Declared
All the IIMs declared the CAT 2009 result on the 'catiim.in' website. Officials of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), which conducted the CAT 2009, said the CAT score would be available on the website and all the aspiring candidates can check the result. They also mentioned that the shortlisted candidates list will be announced on the website as all the IIMs are ready with the list. The official also said that if any candidate has any query regarding the short-listing of candidates, they should contact the respective IIMs.

Rs. 11,000 Crore Allocation For Higher Education In Coming Fiscal
Indian government allocated Rs.11,000 crore to augment growth of its higher education sector. In the union budget 2010-11, the central government has given more than Rs.1,400 crore to higher education in the coming fiscal compared to the current financial year. To aid financially weak students, Finance Minister Mr Pranab Mukherjee has pegged an amount of Rs.500 crore for subsidizing students' loans. The budget has kept aside a sum of Rs.400 crore for new Indian Institutes of Technology that have recently come into operation.

IIM Reveals CAT Marking Method
Considering the hue and cry created by candidates on the computer-based CAT results, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and Prometric, the American firm which organised CAT, have revealed the marking scheme. Several candidates, who were unsatisfied with the marking pattern, demanded the formula used by IIM for normalization. According to Prometric, candidates were given 3 marks for a correct answer and a single negative mark for the wrong answer.

1,549 Candidates Ready To Fight For IIM-B Seats
The Indian Institute of Management - Bangalore (IIM-B) has short listed 1,549 candidates who would compete for its seats. IIM-B had decided to drop the group discussion round from this year - a practice that was an integral component of the admission procedure. In its place, the institute has decided to introduce a new system according to which, shortlisted candidates will now be required to clear an interview and write a short essay.
