The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), taking into notice the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009 fiasco has come up with a resolution to make these exams a year long affair.

The aspiring management students now have a reason to cheer as they now would be allowed to take the entrance exams into the most coveted central government-run management schools all year long.

The decision will allow them to take the test any number of times, on any day. Satish Deodhar, CAT co-ordinator at the IIM-Ahmedabad took a deep breath and envisaged that, "The implementation requires us to develop a huge data bank. But once that is done, students would be allowed to take the entrance throughout the year."

The IIMs are heading towards a realm of changes as they also plan to make CAT a computer adaptive test, which means, the difficulty level of the test would be set according to the ability of the candidate.

According to IIM sources, the initial idea to hold the CAT throughout the year was mooted for 2009 but due to lack of question bank with the management schools the process could not be initiated.

"Thousands of questions were created in the first year of going online, but unlike the conductors of GMAT and GRE, whose bank consisted tens of thousands of them. We plan to be there by 2011 or maximum by three years and then taking CAT could be taken on demand," the sources added.

"The CAT would be put on an 'auto pilot mode' to make it hassle free as designing the questions and carrying out the exam takes up a lot of faculty hours," a former CAT chairman explained.

"The additions then can be easily made in the question bank," he added.
