AIIMS students' strike intensifies
Students of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), continue their boycott for the second day in a row. The students stuck to their demand seeking resignation from AIIMS chief Dr. RC Deka for not providing consultation to Anil Kumar Meena. Anil, who allegedly went into depression, committed suicide after failing the examination. It is reported that he was not able to comprehend the English lecture imparted in the classroom.This is the second death within two years.
It included more than 400 students wearing black ribbons as a sign of protest and surrounded the director's office. The students said that they are not going to compromise unless the director is removed. It is said that Anil faced problems in English and the language classes delivered were not beneficial. Moreover it's not possible for students to attend classes from morning till evening and attend an additional language class to their already tight schedule.
Though the Sub-dean called upon the students, but there was no positive outcome. AIIMS constituted a committee of senior faculty to verify the test results of the first year MBBS student. The institute said that it will go through the entire record of performance and submit the report to the institute. To examine the extent to which the institute has implemented the Thorat Committee recommendations, former UGC chairman Prof Sukhdev Thorat has been given the charge. He will also identify the shortcomings and will provide the institute with short and long term measures. The report is likely to be submitted within a month's duration.
