PG Diploma in Cosmetology from Shyam Lal College
New Delhi, June 16 - After BSc, most students fail to get admission to MSc. And a graduation in basic sciences normally doesn't get one a job. For such students, Shyam Lal College runs a postgraduate diploma in cosmetology. This is the only college that runs this short-term and job-oriented programme. It has 40 seats and any science graduate who has studied chemistry as one of the subjects at the 10+2 level can apply for the programme.
The course was started in 2007. Admission for the 2010-11 session is currently on and will continue until the BSc results are out. "Though some students join companies, the programme also prepares you to start your own beauty clinic. It opens
several self-employment opportunities, especially for female students," says
Dr MK Razdan, principal, Shyam Lal College.
Razdan had applied to University Grants Commission (UGC) for the commencement of programme four years ago, under the scheme "Innovation Programme in Emerging Areas". The programme was eventually given approval alongwith a generous funding of
Rs 36 lakh from the UGC and later from the University of Delhi. The students share a laboratory with the chemistry department and get adjunct faculty from companies as well as from the university's medical colleges - Maulana Azad Medical College and University College of Medical Sciences.
"Essentially, students are taught three things - how cosmetic products are manufactured, their chemical composition and their effects on health. We also tell them about cosmetic dentistry," adds Razdan.
