The Puducherry government has done away with non-resident Indian (NRI) quota for admission in government medical colleges and has allotted the seats to Puducherry students from academic year 2013-14.
It seems the move is aimed at diffusing the growing protests against the controversial region-wise reservation policy. Protesters claimed that the previous region-wise reservation policy gave an edge to students from Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam over Puducherry region while trying for joining professional courses, including medicine.
