Take NEET 2013 in BengaliThe Medical Council of India (MCI) has consented to set the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) 2013 question papers in Bengali apart from English and Hindi. The decision was made by MCI in a meeting on August 23 which was attended by representatives of medical education departments of various states and the MCI officials, reported The Times of India.

According to Susanta Bandyopadhyay, director, medical education, who was also present at the meeting as an adviser from Bengal, the meeting concluded with the inclusion of Bengali, along with three other vernacular languages, in which the question papers will be prepared. Other languages include Tamil, Telugu and Gujarati. (Read more)

Earlier, the common entrance test was planned to be conducted from 2011, and was later postponed to 2012. But, it could not be executed as a number of states, including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh opposed against the idea of framing question papers only in English and Hindi. A senior state medical education official told TOI that they opposed the move earlier as it would otherwise jeopardise the future of students from West Bengal who had done their primary schooling in Bengali medium. The opposition was supported by some other states.

According to sources at the health department, an official announcement will be made to clear the uncertainty over NEET. The syllabus of the common entrance test is also expected soon. (Read more)
