Under the National Centre of Sports Sciences and Research (NCSSR) scheme, six Universities/Institutes and five Medical Colleges have been selected for setting up of Sports Medicine Departments and Sports Science Departments.

Under the National Centre of Sports Sciences and Research (NCSSR) scheme, six Universities/Institutes and five Medical Colleges have been selected for setting up of Sports Medicine Departments and Sports Science Departments.

These colleges were selected on the basis of selection criteria like publications/patents, accreditation, permanent faculty, the requirement of funds, national/international cooperation and proposal and presentation made by them.

NCSSR scheme of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports intends to support a high level of research, education and innovation with respect to the high performance of elite athletes. The scheme has two components -

A net amount of Rs.62.61 Cr has been released since the inception of the NCSSR scheme. Funds are not released state-wise. The goal of the scheme is performed through the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the selected medical colleges, universities and institutes. 

Furthermore, under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), the ministry has adopted research-based selection criteria for elite athletes based on various research inputs like progression rate, current performance, global analysis, past performance, and comparative data. The athletes' performance will also be monitored regularly through scientifically set benchmarks of their progression.
