The appointment of ineligible candidates as assistant teachers in primary schools of West Bengal is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation. So far, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) searched seven premises across West Bengal, including Kolkata, in connection with an ongoing investigation related to the appointment of ineligible candidates as assistant teachers in primary schools of the state. According to India Today, the federal probe agency is scrutinizing the incriminating materials and electronic evidence recovered from the seven locations searched.

WBBPE President’s premise searched

Searches were conducted at the premises of the accused and others, including the then President of West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE), then Secretary of WBBPE and a private company.

On June 9, the CBI had registered a case against unknown office bearers of the WBBPE and others on the allegations that a number of ineligible candidates were appointed as assistant teachers in primary schools illegally through the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET)-2014. The TET is conducted by the WBBPE.

It was further alleged that the primary selection process of TET-2014 was carried out in a way that eligible candidates were deprived. Further probe is underway.

No plans to shut West Bengal schools and colleges

Amid the rising cases of the novel coronavirus, the West Bengal government has decided not to close schools and colleges immediately. Speaking to reporters, West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu said a decision on this will be taken on the advice of the Health Department. The authorities have decided to work on the advice of the Health Department.

With the positivity rate going up to 16.92 per cent, West Bengal reported 2,950 new COVID-19 cases on Friday. Three more people died in the state, while active cases rose to 18,856, as per the Health Department.
