The five-year-long agreement addresses "community resilience, hazard and disaster preparedness, joint research and development, and collaborative courses," said a statement from Amrita University.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has inked a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) to equip coastal communities with early warning solutions for natural disasters and disaster preparedness. The five-year-long agreement addresses "community resilience, hazard and disaster preparedness, joint research and development, and collaborative courses," said a statement from Amrita University.
As part of the agreement, INCOIS and Amrita University launched a community performance-based initiative called Tsunami Ready Programme, by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO in Alappad Grama Panchayat with the aim to develop tsunami preparedness. Alappad was one of the worst-hit places during the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004. The agreement includes academic, research, and capacity-building initiatives from INCOIS and Amrita University to develop efficient disaster response.
The Tsunami Ready Programme initiated by INCOIS in collaboration with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham seeks to develop resilience in coastal communities by spreading awareness and preparing strategies. As part of the programme, a meeting was held with ward members, Panchayat President, Alappad community members, and Amrita faculty and students. INCOIS aims to extend the programme to neighbouring coastal regions. βINCOIS is happy to collaborate with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
This MoU will strengthen collaborative research between the academic and scientific community, thereby enhancing the scope and reachability of INCOIS operational ocean forecasts to the coastal population. Further, the tsunami-ready community recognition programme proposed under this MoU will enhance the capacity of coastal communities to effectively prepare and respond to tsunamis and other ocean-related hazards,β said Srinivasa Kumar, director of INCOIS.
