Alumni seeks stay on IIM Ahmedabad PhD Admissions 2023-24; HC issues notice

IIM-Ahmedabad commenced the admission process for 2023-24 in PhD courses in September 2022 in which SCs, STs and OBCs have not been given the benefit of reservation, the petitioner stated.

IIM Ahmedabad PhD Admissions 2023-24: In response to a petition filed by Global IIM Alumni Network, the Gujarat High Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad. The petitioner filed the plea seeking to implement a reservation quota in admissions to PhD. IIM-Ahmedabad commenced the admission process for 2023-24 in PhD courses in September 2022 in which SCs, STs and OBCs have not been given the benefit of reservation. The alumni has filed the application with a demand to stay in the admission process.

Next hearing on November 15

After the hearing, the High Court issued a notice to IIM-Ahmedabad seeking its reply. The next hearing in the case will be held on November 15. During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel submitted that an application had been filed in November 2021 seeking benefit of reservation to SCs, STs and OBCs in PhD courses in IIM-Ahmedabad, and the High Court had sent a notice to the IIM at that time. Now, the admission process for 2023-24 has started in September 2022 and will be completed in January 2023.

IIM-A not implementing reservations for PhD admissions

There are 20 IIMs across the country, of which 12-15 have implemented reservations in PhD courses. However, it has not yet been implemented in IIM-Ahmedabad.

The plea stated that IIM-A is a central educational institution and, under the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act-2006, it should provide reservations in PhD courses.
