Calcutta High Court has sought the progress report from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the primary teachers' recruitment scam case. A division bench of Calcutta High Court Justice Subrata Talukder has asked the CBI to submit the report by July 19, 2022.

On Thursday, the judge asked Lawyer Bilbadal Bhattacharya, representing CBI, what they were doing in the probe. The lawyer told the court that the special investigation team (SIT) is probing the alleged irregularities. The Judge said that the court wants to see the progress report on this case.

Earlier during the hearing, Joydeep Kar, a lawyer for Manik Bhattacharya, the former president of the Board of Primary Education, had said that all the documents that the single bench had asked the board to submit could not be submitted.

Kar then went on to add, “Can the president be removed for this reason? All those documents have been sent to the forensics in an illegal manner. The board may commit some irregularities. But does that mean illegal work? My client, his wife, and even his married daughter has been asked to account for their assets.”

The Calcutta High Court had earlier upheld the orders of the single bench that asked the CBI to interrogate West Bengal minister Paresh Adhikari in connection with the Class 11th and Class 12th teacher recruitment scam. The court had also asked the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor Jagdeep Dhankar to remove the minister in question from the state cabinet.

The Calcutta HC had passed the order on a plea by a candidate alleging that she was not given a job despite scoring high marks in the teacher recruitment examination. The petitioner accused the minister of giving a teaching post to his daughter even when she scored lesser marks than the petitioner.
