The accident sparked protests by students, demanding setting up public transport dedicated to students and a ban on public vehicles through the campus.
A group of students at Bangalore University blocked all the entry and exit points to campus while demanding a ban on the public vehicles from entering the campus after a girl student fell from the BMTC bus and sustained injuries. A 22-year-old MSc student fell from the bus on the Jnanabharathi campus of Bangalore University and is in ICU now.
The accident sparked protests by students, demanding setting up public transport dedicated to students and a ban on public vehicles through the campus. "Students did not heed their vice-chancellor who asked them to clear the blockade and allow traffic to pass. By evening, the peak hour traffic was affected and we cleared them. They wanted to pitch tents on the road and protest through the night," the police officer said.
The injured Shilpa Shree stays in a university hostel, and is been currently treated in Fortis hospital. As per the police, Shilpa Shree and two classmates were boarding BMTC's route no. 234 at 10.30am to head to college when the driver suddenly moved the vehicle. Shilpa, still on the footboard, lost balance, fell and came under the rear wheels. Bus driver Suresh Kumar, 35, of Rajajinagar depot, was arrested by evening and released on station bail later.
BMTC managing director (in-charge) C Shikha said: "We'll bear the entire hospital expenses. We've launched an investigation and take action against the driver." Shilpa is a second-semester student in MSc (maths). The university released INR 5 lakh as advance for her treatment. Varsity sources said the girl hails from an economically disadvantaged group.
BU further said that it has been urging the government to stop the movement of traffic on the campus. "Traffic inside the campus is increasing by the day. We'll immediately write to the government seeking strict action. It affects academic atmosphere and security is a major concern... The movement of outsiders in the campus is extremely worrisome," said VC Jayakar Shetty.
