Banaras Hindu University has taken yet another step toward its endeavor to facilitate and support the education of students from the underprivileged sections of society. The university has announced two major schemes that will directly benefit divyang students and those who are below the poverty line.

The announcement about the two schemes was made by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudhir Kumar Jain during the celebration of Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at Malaviya Bhawan on October 2, 2022. He said that while institutions and those working there, must be sensitive towards the students with special needs, merely being sensitive isn’t enough. These sensitivities and sensibilities must be translated in measures that benefit the students directly.

Detailing the schemes, the Vice-Chancellor said every year INR 25,000 will be transferred into the bank accounts of all the divyang students of Banaras Hindu University. Under the second scheme, BPL card holder students shall be eligible to receive a financial assistance of INR  25,000 per annum. This will also be transferred directly into their accounts. Prof. Jain said that student welfare and their all-round development is the topmost priority of Banaras Hindu University and the institution will take all possible steps to ensure this. Several new initiatives have also been recently launched for the purpose. Prof. Jain said that the university will also consider increasing the amount of scholarships in future.

The Vice-Chancellor was presiding over the main function of Gandhi Jayanti Celebration. The function was graced by the presence of Prof. J. S. Rajput as the chief guest. A Padma Shri awardee, Prof. Rajput is a noted educationist, former Director of NCERT, New Delhi, and a renowned Gandhian. He was also a member of the Executive Council of BHU.
