BHU to introduce new degree course in Hinduism

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has launched a new course in Hinduism. Students will get to learn ancient traditions, arts, science, knowledge and skills under the Hinduism course.Β
"The University will start the Hinduism course of two years with 40 seats and it will include 11 compulsory papers and 5 optional papers. The admission form for the course will be accepted until September 7. An entrance exam for the same will be conducted on October 3," informed Faculty of Arts, Department of Philosophy and Religion, BHU, Prof. Mukul Raj Mehta to Shiksha.com.
Owing to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and with the campus being closed, the classes will be conducted online and will be continued offline once the situation is conducive.Β
On the introduction of new courses in Hinduism, BHU vice-chancellor Vijay Kumar Shukla, told a media house that "It will be the first-degree course of Hinduism in our country. Earlier, only a diploma course was running in Himachal university. We are teaching other cultures, traditions like Christianity, Islam in universities while Hinduism was not on streamline".
He further said that a large number of applications from foreign students indicates the interest of other countries in Hinduism.
The Philosophy department of BHU will be conducting the course. During the course, the students will be taught the soul of Hinduism, ambitions and outlines of Hinduism while ancient history and culture departments will elaborate on ancient evidence on ancient trading activities, architecture, weapons, tools used by great Indian Emperors. The Sanskrit department will discuss practical aspects of scriptures, Vedas and ancient records through mantras.
Students will enrich themselves with knowledge of ancient warcraft, Hindu chemistry, military science, art, classical music, etc., the Vice Chancellor added.
