Delhi University is mulling to establish a third campus in the east district of the national capital. The reports suggest that the new campus in east Delhi would help in creating higher education opportunities along with reducing the administrative burden from both north and south campus in Delhi. While talking to the media, DU pro-Vice-Chancellor PC Joshi, who is also the acting vice-chancellor said, “We have landed in east Delhi and we are trying to develop that into a campus, just like we have a North and a South campus. We want to have a campus in east Delhi also. The university’s high-powered committee has recently inspected the site and we are holding a meeting on Wednesday to discuss this. We will then take the matter to other statutory bodies of the university for their approval.”

It is expected that the varsity administration would set up law centers and departments for liberal arts courses at the new campus. Professor VC Joshi also revealed that the project will cost around 600 crores and so the administration is making provisions for the funds. DU's new campus will be set up in the Surajmal Vihar area of east Delhi. The land is located near the Karkardooma district courts complex and is accessible by both the Blue and Red lines of Delhi Metro.

However, Deepak Pental, former vice-chancellor of DU believes the third campus should rather be utilized for new courses or for the School of Open Learning, SOL.

Meanwhile, in October, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal concerned over high DU cut-offs had called for action to improve the disparity. The CM also decided to increase the number of colleges and universities in Delhi for the rising number of students applying for admission in the state.
