DU planning to name new college after Sushma Swaraj
Delhi University (DU)Â is planning to name its upcoming college at Fatehpur Beri in South Delhi after the first woman chief minister of Delhi Sushma Swaraj. Some other names are also under consideration.Â
“A couple of other names have also been proposed along with Swaraj. The names of Swami Vivekananda and Veer Savarkar are also under consideration,” an official said. DU Registrar Vikas Gupta said a facilitation centre and a proposed college, name of which was yet to be finalised, was going to be built at Bhatti Kalan Gaon in Fatehpur Beri as part of the university’s centenary year. Â
“The name of the college will be finalised by the Academic Council and Executive Council of the varsity. The name of former CM is also under consideration,” he said.Â
Gupta said it is, however, not yet final whether the upcoming college will be co-ed or a women’s college.Â
“The facilitation centre will enable students of DU, living in and around Bhatti Kalan, to complete various processes, including admission, examination with ease without having to travel long distance,” Gupta said.Â
Officials said Since Bhatti Kalan was a far-flung area, there might be less women takers. There were also plans to establish such centres at some other places as well.Â
In 2019, the Delhi government had allotted 40 bighas of land to DU to build a college in the village. Though the construction is yet begin at the site, the university, in March last year, said the institute would be a women’s college and invited suggestions from the public for naming it.Â
