Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna has announced that its incubation centre has come up with a counter-drone system to detect any unauthorized drone through surveillance and force its landing. The developed system will neutralize the frequency of any unauthorized drone and either make it land automatically or make it return to its origin.

Sobhan Chakraborty and his seven members team, who developed the counter-drone system, said the technology will help to curb the increasing misuse of drones and provide security. “The counter-drone system is a combination of detection, tracking, and neutralization. Increasing availability, affordability and also the development of drones leads to an increase in malicious practices leading to threats in privacy, protection and national security,” Chakraborty said.

“Drone is a carrier, it can carry any payload, it can be a camera, an explosive, bioweapons, IEDs as well. The system that we developed can be helpful, deactivate the drone and provide security,” he said

Chakraborty told TOI on Monday that they developed the system about a month ago and they have already done the commercialization of the first product. “So we are having 3-4 models lined up and we are performing various demonstrations. Presently, we are providing demonstrations to the defence and in verbal communication with the Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand police. I also had a discussion with the Delhi police as well for its demonstration,” Chakraborty said.

“The drone will either automatically land or return to its origin or pilot. We are also working on detecting the pilot and its origination through signals and transmission,” he said.
He added: “The team is developing a complete 24x7 operational solution where any drones entering in restricted premises will be detected, followed by its movements will be tracked and an alarm will be generated. If the drone is unauthorized then it will be neutralized immediately.”
