The move comes after the cel met to discuss the steps that need to be taken against a teacher who has been accused of attacking a PhD student because of her caste.
Jadavpur University's SC/ST/OBC cell has adopted a resolution that states that the incident is a matter of inhuman act and is devastating for an academic institute. The move comes after the cell met to discuss the steps that need to be taken against a teacher who has been accused of attacking a PhD student because of her caste.
“The cell considered that the allegations against the (accused) teacher are serious in nature and demands strong judgement according to the law of the land,” reads the resolution, as reported by The Telegraph.
"The cell has also recommended that the alleged incidents be reported to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes and the Office of the Commissioner of Persons with Disabilities, West Bengal," an official of the university said.
The cell has recommend that the teacher, an assistant professor in the international relations department, shall remain suspended until an inquiry into the allegations was over.
On September 12, the students lodged a complaint with the JU authorities against the teacher. The university referred the case to the Internal Complaints Committee. Meanwhile, the varsity's internal committee missed 90-day deadline in harassment probe.
According to the law, the ICC had time till December 11 (three months since the filing of the complaint) to submit a report.
