JMI and Sikkim University launched book on urbanisation in Northeast India

Professor Amarjeet Singh, Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (CNESPR), JMI and Komol Singha, Department of Economics, Sikkim University, Gangtok jointly edited the book, published in 2020 by the Routledge (Taylor and Francis Group), Oxon and New York.

Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) and Sikkim University jointly brought out an edited book titled ‘Understanding Urbanisation in Northeast India: Issues and Challenges’. According to the reports, Professor Amarjeet Singh, Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (CNESPR), JMI and Komol Singha, Department of Economics, Sikkim University, Gangtok jointly edited the book, published in 2020 by the Routledge (Taylor and Francis Group), Oxon and New York.

The theme of the book discusses the nature and patterns of urbanisation in India’s Northeast region and its impact on environment, infrastructure, and socio-economic conditions of the region.

Understanding Urbanisation in Northeast India: Issues and Challenges

The book comprising of 14 essays, broadly analyses the issues of urban congestion, frontier urbanism, smart cities, vernacular architecture, street vending, and urban water and waste management.

The book is an outcome of a seminar jointly organised in November 2018, by the Department of Economics, Sikkim University and the CNESPR, JMI at Sikkim University, Gangtok.

The Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi generously supported financially to organize the seminar. The reports suggest that the seminar was well attended by the teachers, town-planners, and students.

Aim of the book

The editors of the compendium that discusses important issues sincerely hope that the book will help, not only in understanding the trend and patters of urbanisation in the hill region but also in developing a handbook of urban studies. It will also help readers to think of measures to tackle urban issues in India in general and the Northeast region in particular.
