Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has started the physical verification of the documents of the first-year students. The varsity is doing document verification for all those students who took the admission for the academic session 2021-22. It must be noted that these students have been attending online classes and were not called back to campus due to COVID-19 and the shortage of hostels.

As per the officials, the document verification work will continue until June 10, depending on the several undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses. From the last few months, the varsity has been facing issues regarding the availability of sufficient hostel accommodation for the students. Research scholars were earlier told that extensions for hostel rooms will be provided on a case-to-case basis - and not be dependent on extensions received for thesis submissions.

However, the situation has improved. "We have sorted out the issue to the maximum possible extent. Now we will accommodate as many students as possible. Approximately 1,500 seats should be there now, so allotment of hostels will be done accordingly for the first-year students," the official said, as reported by TOI.

Last year, in December, the University officials had said that there has been a shortfall of around 1500 seats because of which the varsity is not able to accommodate new students. The official said, "Within a month or so, the process should be completed fully. Once the students return to the campus, a call on resuming offline classes for them will also be taken. Hopefully, there will be no other disruptions in terms of the Covid-19 pandemic. "
