Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has directed all the international students studying at the varsity to approach the Dead/Chairperson of the concerned school/Centre to obtain the required bonafide certificate.
The move comes after over 20 Afghani students from JNU had requested the Indian government to extend their visas that are going to expire in the next 2 months. Amid the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, students have been pleading with the authorities to help them to extend their stay in India. A letter had also been written to the JNU administration and the central government requesting the visa period of Afghan students to be extended.
On August 14, JNU released a press note stating, "Some Afghan students of JNU have requested the JNU administration to facilitate their return to the Campus. As the University has remained closed as per the latest Circular issued by the DDMA, Govt. of NCT, Delhi, this matter is currently being looked into."
For most Afghani students studying at JNU the visa limit is going to get over by November this year, however, with the situation back home turning volatile, they do not want to go back and they want to get their visa period extended through academic courses like PhD.
"For a war-torn country like Afghanistan, most of the people are extensively unemployed and trying to escape from either death or captivity. Arranging a 'hefty fee' seems impossible." said Afghan students in JNU while talking to ANI.
The Taliban had taken charge of the Afghan capital, Kabul, earlier this week, leaving thousands of people homeless.
