On 29th year of demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) staged a protest demanding its re-building at the same site. On December 6, 1992, the historic Babri Masjid was demolished by kar sevaks who had stormed into the site in an event that had led to riots and communal tension across the country. Marking the 29th anniversary of demolition of Babri Masjid, the JNUSU staged a protest on campus to rebuild it.

JNUSU vice president Saket Moon said that during the protest one slogan was given: " Nahi Sahenge Hashimpura, Nahi Sahenge Dadri, Phir Banao, Phir Banao Dadri." The protest mentioned both Hashimpura Massacare and Babri Masjid demolition. On May 22, 1987, 42 Muslim men were were rounded up from the Hashimpura locality in Meerut by UP Provincial Armed Constabulary for their cold-blooded execution. The same happened in Babri too. This is totally wrong and to avoid any such act in future, we held the protest. We demand that the Babri Masjid should be made again."

On Saturday, the JNUSU defied the registrar’s warning and did screening on the campus Ram ke Naam, a national award-winning documentary on the campaign that led to the Babri Masjid demolition. However, no incident was reported during the late-night screening of the Anand Patwardhan film at the office of the Left-led students’ union, that the JNU administration does not formally recognise since its term has expired.

Talking about the film screening, JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh said that the film was earlier screened in 2019 without any problem.  “It’s an award-winning film that has been shown on Doordarshan. There is nothing about it that can disrupt communal harmony,” reported Indian Express.
