The Kannur University has included the writings of the Hindutva leaders in the revised syllabus of the MA Governance and Politics course. The content of the syllabus sparked controversy and saw student organizations like KSU and MSF staging protests in front of the university. The protesters claimed that this is an act of saffronizing the education system.
After the protest, the syllabus has been put on hold. A five-member committee has been formed to investigate the merit of the complaint. The five-member committee will be filling a report in the next five days on the same, as reported by India Today.
"SFI's stand is objecting to the syllabus and we demand that the syllabus be changed," Adv KM Sachin Dev, CPM MLA said, as reported by the media house.
KSU members said that the Vice-Chancellor has promised to conduct the investigation and the five-member committee will submit a report in the next five days. Till then, the protest would be withdrawn and the next course of action would be taken after seeing the report's findings.
The course is available only in Brennen College, Thalassery, and the third-semester core course titled 'Themes in Indian Politics' has extracts from books such as 'Hindutva: Who is a Hindu?' (VD Savarkar), 'We or Our Nationhood Defined' (MS Golwalkar: Chapter- II, III, and IV extracts), 'Bunch of Thoughts' (MS Golwalkar) and 'Integral Humanism' (Deendayal Upadhyaya).
The course which had started in November 2020 had its syllabus revised last month and the core paper ‘Contemporary Political Theory’ was replaced with ‘Themes in Indian Politics’.
