Kerala University Senate has given nod to starting nine new study departments with an aim to equip the University in tune with the current developments in the science and technology sector.

The University of Kerala will soon be starting nine new study departments. At a recently held meeting, the University Senate at the University of Kerala has given nod to starting nine new study departments with an aim to equip the University in tune with the current developments in the science and technology sector.

Kerala University is planning to establish new departments such as Communication Science and Electronics, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Data Science, Functional Organic Materials, Oceanography and Blue Economy, Renewable Energy, Integrative Biology, and Atmospheric Science and Design.

While speaking to Shiksha, Kerala University Pro-vice chancellor, P P Ajayakumar said we have decided to start different departments in this area because at present we don't have any research or education in this area in Kerala. The research in these areas will certainly support society because now we are moving more and more to a digital society and AI has become a part of our day-to-day life including healthcare.  The new departments will check the flow of students for higher education to other states and foreign countries. Besides this, research can be redefined to suit the needs of the community and will enhance research and entrepreneurship in new sectors."

"We are waiting for the approval of the Chancellor as of now, once we get it, after that we will decide regarding the admission process, number of seats and other details," he added.

Each of the departments will offer both Post Graduate and PhD course options. The Communication Science and Electronics department is meant to promote study and research in signal and image processing, nanotechnology and solar energy materials. Artificial intelligence and robotics will focus on computer vision, machine learning, brain and cognitive science and the design and development of robots.
