MBBS, BAMS Integrated Course to Span Over 5 Years at JIPMER Puducherry
The MBBS-BAMS integrated course will be a degree course with a duration of more than five years, including one year internship for the dual degree at JIPMER Puducherry.
The MBBS-BAMS integrated course at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, will be a programme with a duration of more than five years, with one year internship leading to dual degrees. On May 27, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and AYUSH announced India's first integrated MBBS and BAMS course at JIPMER Puducherry.
The Auroville Foundation has proposed the Medicine and Ayurveda integrated course. As per the media reports, the MBBS BAMS integrated course syllabus for phase 1 is ready. The syllabus has been prepared on the competency-based curriculum under the guidance of the National Medical Commission (NMC). Reportedly, the integrated course will be a degree-level programme with a duration of more than five years, as reported by Medical Dialogues.
Meanwhile, the Allopathic doctors are against of Government's plan to combine the MBBS with the BAMS programme. The Indian Medical Association strongly condemn the decision to mix Medicine with Ayurveda in order to conserve the purity of each discipline of medicine.

JIPMER Puducherry offers the Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme in 19 specialisations. The PG-level course is offered in a full-time mode. Admission to the courses is based on merit in INI CET. The specialisations are Anatomy, Pathology, Pediatrics, Physiology, Psychiatry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Anaesthesiology, Radio-Diagnosis, General Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Dermatology, Venereology & Leprology, Immuno Haematology & Blood Transfusion.
JIPMER offers undergraduate, postgraduate, super-specialty, and doctoral programmes including MBBS, BSc, MD, MCh, DM, PDF, PDCC, MS, etc. These courses are offered in full-time mode. Students must appear for relevant entrance exams for admission. The accepted exams are NEET, INI CET, INI SS, etc. The institute also conducts its own entrance exam for PDF/ PDCC courses.
JIPMER Puducherry fee once paid by the college students will never be refunded. If a student decides to withdraw their admission or leaves a course midway, the following rules apply:
- Caution Deposits: The caution deposit paid by the students is the only refundable fee component & is returned to the student upon successful course completition or when leaving the hostel.
- Academic Fees: The entire amount paid at the time of JIPMER admission will be forfeited.
- Penalty: For MBBS students who withdraw admission after getting a seat, an additional penalty of INR 10,000 will be imposed.
However, JIPMER Puducherry is yet to officially disclose any details concerning the MBBS and BAMS integrated programme, claiming that the communication between JIPMER and the Union Health Ministry regarding the proposal is unavailable.
Auroville secretary Dr Jayanti S Ravi, who has been mentioned in her January 25 letter, stated that the discussions have been ongoing for the last several months with Dr V K Paul, Member, NITI Aayog; Dr Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, AYUSH. However, their comments on the integrated course and the details of the programme are yet to be made public.
