The move comes after Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, flagging alleged threats from a Trinamool Congress leader and urged to provide security.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has advised Visva Bharti University to set up an internal committee to establish a line of communication with the protesting students and to complete the admission process and declare the results wherever it is due.
The move comes after Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, flagging alleged threats from a Trinamool Congress leader and urged to provide security. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the university’s Chancellor.
On Thursday, members of the Visva-Bharati University Faculty Association (VBUFA) also reached out to PM Modi, demanding action against the VC and save the Visva Bharti University from “further degeneration”.
A group of students has been protesting outside the VC house to demand revocation of rustication of three students on charges of “gross indiscipline and misconduct”. The university administration subsequently suspended its admission process on the ground that the “physical presence of the V-C is necessary”. It also announced that “publication of results will not be possible till the situation becomes normal”.
The Union Education Minister asked the University to resume its normal functioning, which includes completing the admission process which was earlier halted due to the protest. He also asked the University to disburse faculty salaries and pension. Meanwhile, he also spoke to West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar, who is the university’s rector, about the prevailing situation on the campus.
Higher Education Secretary Amit Khare spoke to the Bengal Chief Secretary and requested him to provide whatever assistance the university needs in terms of security, the Indian Express reported.
