IAF Announces GATE-Based Entry for Technical Branches, No AFCAT Needed for Engineers
IAF has introduced GATE-based entry scheme for Technical Branch officers, allowing eligible engineering graduates to skip AFCAT written exam. Check details hereΒ
GATE: Indian Air Force has introduced a new scheme for induction into its Technical Branch in officer cadre through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores. This will allow eligible engineering graduates to join Technical Branch without appearing for Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) written examination in some cases. According to officials, this initiative aims to simplify recruitment process for technically qualified candidates.
Direct Shortlisting Through GATE Scores
Under this new scheme, candidates applying for Ground Duty (Technical) Branch can now use their valid GATE scores for direct shortlisting to Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs). Those shortlisted based on their GATE scores will directly appear for AFSB interview stage, bypassing AFCAT written exam. Indian Air Force said candidates applying through GATE route will be shortlisted on merit for further testing at AFSBs.
AFCAT Still Main Entry Route
Despite introduction of GATE-based entry scheme, IAF clarified that AFCAT will continue to remain standard entry route for all branches, including Technical Branch. Candidates eligible for the Technical Branch can apply through AFCAT, GATE Score Entry or both, provided they meet eligibility criteria mentioned in notification.
AFCAT 02/2026 Notification Released
GATE-Based Entry for Technical Branches in IAF comes along with release of AFCAT 02/2026 notification for courses beginning in July 2027. AFCAT 02/2026 application process started on May 20 and will remain open till June 19. Candidates applying through GATE Score Entry and NCC Special Entry are exempted from paying AFCAT exam fee.
