IIT Bhubaneswar Develops Digital Power Substation; Details Below

According to official statement, IIT Bhubaneswar digital power substation will enable real time monitoring and protection of entire electrical distribution network of the institute.

IIT Bhubaneswar has released an advanced digital substation equipped with a centralised monitoring and protection system. The system is inaugurated by Energy Department’s Additional Chief Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev. It was unveiled at the 33/11 kV campus substation in the presence of Director Shreepad Karmalkar.

The main goal was to design ,develop, and demonstrate a Centralized Protection and Monitoring system for a distribution substation including integration of Distributed Energy Resources.

IIT Bhubaneswar Digital Substation with Centralized Monitoring and Protection System Details

The project was undertaken by Prof. S. R. Samantaray, Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Electrical and Computer Sciences, IIT Bhubaneswar. It was undertaken as demonstration initiative under National Perspective Plan of Central Power Research Institute.
According to official statement, this project represents one of indigenously developed digital substation frameworks in India, benefitting intelligent merging units that eliminate the need for conventional physical Intelligent Electronic Devices within the substation.
It is a future ready architecture. It lays the foundation for the development of a Distributed Energy Resource Management System embedded within the CPM framework, enabling enhanced grid intelligence, flexibility, and reliability.
The institute has said that its commitment to advanced sustainable energy infrastructure, indigenization of power system solutions, advancing smart grid technologies is aligned with national priorities. Recently, IIT Bhubaneswar has inaugurated second edition of Pravaah - the combined Cultural and Technopreneurship Annual Festival. It was a four day event.
