IIT Bombay PG student dies by suicide
122 students of IITs, IIMs, central universities and other centrally funded educational institutions committed suicide during 2014-21.
A post-graduate student of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has died by suicide this morning. The 26-year-old student allegedly jumped from the 7th floor of his hostel building.
According to Mumbai Police, in his recovered suicide note, the student stated he had depression and was under treatment, and he did not hold anyone responsible. “further probe is underway,” stated Mumbai Police.
The cases of suicide at premier technical institutions in the country has been on the rise and as data shared by the Education Ministry a total of 122 students of IITs, IIMs, central universities and other centrally funded higher educational institutions committed suicide during 2014-21.
As per the data shared by the ministry in Lok Sabha in December 2021, 121 incidents of suicides by the students of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), central universities and other higher educational institutions were reported during the period.
In a written response to a question in Lok Sabha, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated that of the 122 students who committed suicide, 24 belonged to Scheduled Caste (SC), 41 to Other Backward Classes (OBC), three to Scheduled Tribe (ST). While three such students were from the Minority category.
