The Mumbai police have lodged an FIR against unknown persons for allegedly indulging in caste discrimination, resulting in the death of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)Β Bombay student Darshan Solanki.Β The case was registered 47 days after Solanki allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a building on the IIT Bombay campus in Powai.Β

Special Investigation Team (SIT) officials visited the Powai police station along with Darshan's father Ramesh Solanki on Thursday night and based on his complaint, the FIR was registered, a police official said. On Wednesday, Ramesh Solanki had written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Mumbai police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, alleging that his family is facing harassment from the police for registering an FIR into his son’s death. Β

In his letter, Darshan's father, Ramesh Solanki, mentioned that when he visited the Powai police station for registration of the FIR, the police station refused, stating that since the special investigation team (SIT) had been constituted to investigate the case, they cannot register the FIR and will forward the complaint to the SIT for necessary action.Β Β Β

The family also alleged that the SIT did not cooperate with their demand for the registration of the FIR when they approached them on March 16.Β They have urged the Chief Minister to ensure that the FIR is registered on the basis of their complaint and justice is served to their son.Β

Recently, the SIT probing Solanki's death saidΒ it has recovered a note that mentions the name of his hostel mate.Β The suicide note was recovered from Solanki's hostel room a few days ago.Β Β  Β
