IIT Delhi’s 56th Convocation Honours 2,764 Graduates; Record 530 PhDs Conferred

At IIT Delhi 56th Convocation, 2,764 students were awarded degrees and diplomas, including a record 530 PhD scholars, with Chief Guest Dr. Tessy Thomas, the Missile Woman of India, inspiring the graduating class.
IIT Delhi Convocation 2025: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi celebrated its 56th Convocation, with Chief Guest Dr. Tessy Thomas, FNAE, former Director General (Aeronautical Systems), DRDO, also known as the ‘Missile Woman of India’ and currently Vice Chancellor of the Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE), Kanyakumari, delivering the convocation address. The ceremony was presided over by Harish Salve, Chairperson of the Board of Governors, IIT Delhi.
A total of 2,764 students received degrees and diplomas, including a record 530 PhD scholars. Notably, the first batch of BTech graduates in Energy Engineering and the inaugural cohorts of three postgraduate programmes, the Interdisciplinary MTech in Robotics, and the Master of Science by Research in VLSI Design, Tools and Technology, and in Artificial Intelligence, were awarded degrees at the ceremony.
IIT Delhi Convocation 2025 Awards
Of the 2,764 students graduating, 735 were women, and 43 were international students representing nearly 20 countries. The youngest graduate this year was 20-year-old Chandan Godara (B.Tech. in Civil Engineering), while 63-year-old Dr. Gopal Krishan Taneja (PhD) was the oldest degree recipient. Ankit Mondal (B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering) was awarded the President’s Gold Medal for achieving the highest CGPA among B.Tech and Dual Degree graduates.

Two Perfect Ten Gold Medals were conferred on Shreyansh Gupta (M.Tech. in Thermal Engineering) and Soumili Chakraborti (M.Tech. in Polymer Science and Technology) for attaining a perfect CGPA of 10 in their postgraduate programmes. Additionally, 16 students received Institute Silver Medals for achieving the highest CGPA in their respective programmes.
While addressing the graduating students, Chief Guest Dr. Tessy Thomas, the Missile Woman of India, said, “It is with immense pride and a deep sense of honour that I stand before you today at the 56th Convocation of IIT Delhi—a cradle of innovation, knowledge, and nation-building. You have reached the culmination of years of rigorous study, countless hours of experimentation, and sleepless nights of coding, designing, analysing, innovating, and aiming high.”
Addressing the students, she added, “In a world increasingly driven by data, algorithms, and automation, human values will matter more than the valuations. IIT education has prepared you to build systems and has trained you to be custodians of trust in a world dominated by technology. As you step out, remember the words of Prof. Satish Dhawan, one of India’s finest aerospace scientists— “Progress in science and technology must be accompanied by progress in thought, values, and compassion.”
At the 56th convocation, IIT Delhi honoured its esteemed alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Awards 2025 (Distinguished Alumni Award 06 alumni, Distinguished Alumni Service Award 01, Graduates of Last Decade (GOLD) Award 01). Today, the Institute also launched a DAA (Distinguished Alumni Award) Wall in the Lecture Hall Complex
Addressing the graduating students, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, said, “As you step out of the comfort zone of this campus into the real world, you will engage with a world of challenges and opportunities. Remember that your learning continues. We have equipped you with skills, tools, and technologies and the ability to think on your feet. We have taught you to question, to think for yourself. Please have the courage of your convictions. The oath that you will take today commits you to have honesty and integrity in everything that you do.”
