IIT Madras GATE 2026 Registration Soon at iitm.ac.in: Date, Eligibility, Programmes, Fees
IIT Madras GATE 2026 application form: The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, will start online registration for MTech admission through GATE 2026 soon. Candidates who appeared for GATE this year or in 2025 or 2024 will be eligible to apply for IITM GATE MTech admission 2026. Read below to check eligibility, fees, course details, below.
IIT Madras will release GATE 2026 MTech online application form process soon. Considering last year’s timeline, it is expected that the IIT Madras GATE 2026 application form will be released in the third/fourth week of March 2026. Candidates who will apply for IIT Madras GATE 2026 have to register at COAP portal as well. The dates will be available soon on the official website.
Course Programmes Offered at IIT Madras
The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras offers around 34 MTech programmes (department-wise). Candidates willing to apply must check instructions carefully and apply once the form is activated. IIT Madras has introduced three new MTech programmes, which can be checked below -
- MTech in Robotics under the Department of Engineering
- Computational Engineering for Mechanical Systems under Mechanical Engineering
- MTech in Semiconductor Materials Technology under the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Technology
How to fill IIT Madras GATE 2026 MTech application form?
To apply, candidates have to visit official website and click on the registration link. Applicants have to provide their personal, educational, and communication details along with GATE score details. Upload documents according to specifications and make fee payment. The GATE 2026 IIT Madras registration fee is INR 300 for SC/ST, PwD and female candidates and INR 600 for all others.

40 marks in GATE will approximately give a rank between 2000 to 5000 depending on the paper difficulty level and the number of registered candidates in that particular branch. Obtaining 40 marks is mainly considered average, opening chances to a few new IITs (less popular branches) and NITs.
However, rank for 40 marks in the Graduate Aptitude in Engineering can give a different rank value for different branches and disciplines. For example, 40 marks in GATE CSE can correspond to 9000 to 10000 rank. On the other hand, 40 marks in GATE ME, can correspond to 6000 - 7100 rank.
Advice to students who secured 40 marks in GATE exam: Better to apply in some state-level colleges or new NITs.
You can apply for two GATE papers (maximum). While filling out the GATE application form, you need to select the primary and secondary paper. The GATE secondary paper must be from the subject list prescribed by the GATE authorities. Before adding the paper, go through the subject combination list and GATE paper codes.
Candidates opting for two GATE papers will have to pay double the fees mentioned -
For example,
- If a general category candidate is applying for two GATE papers, then he/she has to pay a fee of INR 4000 (during the regular timeline) and INR 5000 (during the extended period).
- The same applies to the female, SC, ST, and PwD category candidates, INR 2000 (during the regular time period) and INR 3000 (during the extended period).
A GATE score of 700 to 800 is mainly required for M.Tech admission at IIT (especially for top IITs). However, the score also depends on the IIT popularity, branch popularity, and other factors. For new IITs, a GATE score of 500 to 600 is mainly required.
It is advised to check the past year's GATE cutoff trends before opting for counselling and admission.
All MTech admission offer will be displayed at COAPS portal. The schedule will be released soon. COAP registration is mandatory and can be done for free. The GATE 2026 result will be declared on March 19 and the scorecard of GATE 2026 will be made available for download from March 27 onwards. Candidates can check their result at GOAPS using their enrollment ID and password.
