IIT Madras Launches Advanced Ocean Engineering Research Facility With Mazagon Dock Support

Indian Institute of Technology Madras has inauguratedΒ advanced ocean engineering research facility with CSR support from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited at its satellite campus in Thaiyur near Chennai. The facility was inaugurated in presence of IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti and Dean Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam.
This newly launched Circulating Water Tunnel facility includes hybrid wind and water channel system and is now fully operational. It will provide a controlled testing environment for research related to ship models, propellers, marine vehicles, offshore systems and underwater structures.
According to IIT Madras, this facility will strengthen research and teaching activities in Department of Ocean Engineering. It will also support studies in fluid dynamics and offer practical training opportunities for students and researchers working in ocean engineering and related fields.
Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam said this collaboration with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders is step towards boosting research and technology development in ocean engineering. He added that this facility will help students, faculty and researchers carry out advanced hydrodynamic studies and gain hands-on research experience in maritime and naval engineering.
