IIT Madras Researchers develop mechanism to help reduce vibrations in Automobiles
Researchers at IIT Madras has come up with a way to reduce vibration during the car rides. Check details here
A team of researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have found a way to reduce the vibration during car rides, the institute said in a statement. The researchers who are working in the field of Carbon Nanotube Composites have found promising results in reducing the vibration which is expected to be useful in industries such as aerospace, automobile and construction. The research team is headed by Professor Prathap Haridoss, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras, along with students and co-scientists at the institute. The research is aimed at understanding the mechanisms of vibrations damping in polymers, that will, in-turn help in coming up with designs of better vibration dampers in automobiles.
Professor Haridoss and his collaborators work with a special class of composites called polymer nanocomposites. The discovery that nanoparticles – particles a hundred thousand times smaller than the thickness of a sheet of paper – can afford extraordinary properties to polymers, is the basis of such composites, IIT Madras said in a statement.
Professor Haridoss said, “The outstanding properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can tremendously improve mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of polymers. Of the numerous attractive properties of CNT-polymer composites, their vibration damping properties make them useful in aerospace, automobile and construction industries.”
The institute has been rated the top engineering institution by the National Institutional Ranking Framework for four consecutive years - 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Those seeking admission in IIT Madras must fill an online application form first. IITM BTech admission is offered based on a candidate's rank in JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA Counselling. CAT score is considered to offer admission to the MBA programme. Students are admitted to MSc programme through IIT JAM. The institution grants admission to the MTech programme on the basis of the applicants' GATE score. For 5-year integrated Master of Arts programmes, the applicants must clear the IITM specific Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE)
