IIT Madras to offer free online course on Data Science for Engineers through NPTEL

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has invited applications for a free online course called Data Science for Engineers through the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) project of SWAYAM, of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD).

The course will be conducted by IIT Madras professors Ragunathan Rengasamy and Shankar Narasimhan.

Steps to register for Data Science for Engineering courses

  • Go to the official website - onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in
  • Search for the course
  • For registration, the student will have to create a username, password and provide a valid email ID.
  • After the account is created, the student can register for the course.

There are no set eligibility criteria for the course and the candidates will also be provided with 10 hours of pre-course material that the students need to practise to be ready to take the course. 

About Data Science for Engineering Courses

The 8-week long online course is free of cost. However, if the student wishes to sit for the examination and get a certificate, they will have to pay a nominal fee of Rs 1000. To obtain the certificate, the students will have to get 25% of the average of the best 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course. They will also have to secure 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100. The final score will be the total of the average assignment score and the exam score. The e-certificate will have the logos of IIT Madras and NPTEL. No physical certificates will be dispatched.

  • Algebraic view - vectors, matrices, a product of matrix & vector, rank, null space, solution of an over-determined set of equations and pseudo-inverse) 
  • Geometric view - vectors, distance, projections, eigenvalue decomposition
Week 3 Statistics (descriptive statistics, the notion of probability, distributions, mean, variance, covariance, covariance matrix, understanding univariate and multivariate normal distributions, introduction to hypothesis testing, the confidence interval for estimates)  
Week 4 Optimization
Week 5
  • Optimization
  • Typology of data science problems and a solution framework
Week 6
  • Simple linear regression and verifying assumptions used in linear regression 
  • Multivariate linear regression, model assessment, assessing the importance of different variables, subset selection
Week 7  Classification using logistic regression
Week 8  Classification using kNN and k-means clustering

About Course Instructors

Before joining IIT Madras as a professor, Prof Rengaswamy was a professor of chemical engineering and co-director of the process control and optimization consortium at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, USA, and Prof Narasimhan has co-authored several important papers and a book titled Data Reconciliation and Gross Error Detection: An Intelligent Use of Process Data which has received critical appreciation in India and abroad.
