The National Engineer’s Day is celebrated on September 15 to mark the birth anniversary of eminent engineer Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya not only in India but also in Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

    • The National Engineer’s Day is celebrated on September 15 to mark the birth anniversary of eminent engineer Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya not only in India but also in Sri Lanka and Tanzania. The day is celebrated to commemorate the great work of engineers and to encourage them for improvement and innovation.  
  • Sir Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli village of Karnataka. He made significant contributions in the field of engineering. He played a crucial role in constructing dams, reservoirs and hydropower projects in India. He established the Government Engineering College known as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in 1917.  
  • In 1955, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya received India’s highest honour, the Bharat Ratna. He was also regarded as the ‘Father of Modern Mysore’ and was also graced with the British Knighthood by the then King George VV, which put ‘Sir’ before his name.  
  • His notable contributions include the block system of irrigation in the Deccan canals in 1899 and the flood protection system in Hyderabad.  

IITs organise lectures, workshops to commemorate Sir Visvesvaraya

PM greets engineers on Twitter

Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked engineers for their pivotal role in making planet better and technologically advanced on the occasion of Engineers’ Day. He took to Twitter to pay homage to Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. 

Union Home minister Amit Shah also tweeted, “Tributes to Sir M Visvesvaraya Ji, a prolific engineer and an inspiration to people from all walks of life on his Jayanti.Engineers Day greetings to our brilliant engineers who are constantly striving towards the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat through their amazing innovations.”
