LPU Jalandhar shines in Khelo India University Games

LPU claimed a big tally of 23 medals consisting of 9 Gold, 6 Silver and 8 Bronze medals. Around 3500 University students of the country had competed in a wide range of sporting events of international magnitude.

In the first ever edition of the University Students’ prominent sports competition ‘Khelo India University Games-2020’, sportspersons of Lovely Professional University (LPU) have emerged as ‘Overall Champions’ among nation’s all private universities. LPU ranked 6^th among 96 participating universities from all across the nation. It claimed a big tally of 23 medals consisting of 9 Gold, 6 Silver and 8 Bronze medals. Around 3500 University students of the country had competed in a wide range of sporting events of international magnitude.

The inauguration of the competition was done by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the month of February 2020 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha and the competition ended on March 1, 2020. By means of the competitions, the university students were offered a platform to showcase their talents and top in 17 sporting events including Judo, Kabaddi, Rugby, Swimming, Table Tennis, Weight-Lifting, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Fencing, and Wrestling etc.

LPU students won 2 gold medals in Weightlifting in weight category of 59 kgs and 96 kgs; 3 in Judo in weight category of 60 kgs, 78 kgs, 100+ kgs; and one each in Boxing, Javelin Throw, Wrestling, and Heptathlon. The gold medal winners included lifters Gurjeet, Yumnum Khondonbi Chanu; Wrestler Rani Rana, Javelin Thrower Shilpa, Judo players Anmol, Ritik Kumar, Shiva Kumar and Boxer Ashutosh.

KIUG-2020 is the biggest ever multi-discipline sports event organised for university students. It is also the best platform to prepare the talented sportspersons for India. Panjab University Chandigarh claimed the top honours winning the championship and Savitribai Phule Pune University was declared as the runners-up.
