Maharashtra registers increase in engineering admissions
As many as 1.09 lakh students have confirmed seats in various engineering branches in Maharashtra this year.
Computer science most-preferred course among students
Maharashtra has registered an increase in the number of engineering admissions this year with 1.09 lakh students confirming seats in various engineering branches. As per a report published in the Times of India, computer science was the most-preferred course. As per the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell, 21,058 of the 22,051 computer engineering seats have been filled.
Chandrashekhar Kulkarni, a faculty member at Thadomal Shahani College of Engineering, the increased student interest is due to better class 12 results, which encouraged more candidates to take the entrance exam. He said on the other hand, the results of Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced were rather poor, causing students to migrate to state colleges.
Seats in courses such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, blockchain technology, and data science have also been almost filled. Even electronics and telecommunication technology have attracted good number of candidates. It is the third largest branch in terms of the number of seats whose popularity increased this year with 15,598 candidates (17,364 seats) opting for it.
Few students opt for mechanical engineering
However, mechanical engineering, which has the lionβs share of seats in Maharashtra (24,819), witnessed fewer students opting for it. With nearly 50 per cent of seats available, only 12,229 students chose to opt for this branch. Similarly is the case with civil engineering with merely 7,271 students accepting the 18,622 available seats in this branch.
