NEP 2020: Engineering courses in regional languages will benefit rural youth, PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the policymakers, students and teachers across the country in the field of education and skill development on the occasion of completion of one year of the approval of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by the Union Cabinet.
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has said that the launch of engineering courses in regional languages will benefit the youth from rural areas of the country. Modi was speaking at the first anniversary of the launch of the new National Education Policy. Â
Prime Minister today launched engineering programmes in regional languages and guidelines for the internationalization of higher education. He said: “I am glad that 14 engineering colleges in 8 states are going to start engineering studies in 5 Indian languages- Hindi-Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Bangla. A tool has also been developed for translation of engineering course into 11 Indian languages.”
Talking about engineering courses being launched in regional languages, Modi said that this will benefit students from rural areas who want to pursue engineering education. The Prime Minister also launched many programs related to the education sector.
One of the ambitious schemes of the Modi government has been Study in India programmes under which it has been trying to attract foreign students, but the scheme has not seen much success in the past few years. Nirmala Sitharaman during her Budget allocation also reduced allocation under the scheme. However, talking about attracting foreign students Modi said: “We have seen this environment for decades when it was believed that to study well one had to go abroad. But for good studies students from abroad come to India, best institutions come to India, we are going to see this now.”
PM Modi said that how far India will go in the future, how much height the country will achieve, will depend on that what kind of education is being imparted to youth at present i.e. today. “I believe that the new national education policy of India is one of the big factors in the great sacrifice of nation-building,” Modi said.
PM Modi today launched the Academic Bank of Credit that will provide multiple entry and exit options for students in Higher education. Â
PM launches SAFAL, NISHTHA 2.0
For the school education, PM launched, Vidya Pravesh, a three-month play-based school preparation module for Grade 1 students; Indian Sign Language as a Subject at the secondary level; NISHTHA 2.0, an integrated programme of teacher training designed by NCERT.

Modi also launched SAFAL (Structured Assessment For Analyzing Learning Levels), a competency-based assessment framework for Grades 3, 5 and 8 in CBSE schools; and a website dedicated to Artificial Intelligence.
Talking about the programme, Modi said that the Artificial Intelligence program which has just been launched will also make youth future-oriented, opening the way for an AI-driven economy.
PM also launched National Digital Education Architecture (NDEAR) and National Education Technology Forum (NETF). These initiatives will mark a significant step towards the realization of the goals of NEP 2020 and will make the education sector more vibrant and accessible.
Modi said that for the first time, Indian Sign Language has been given the status of a language subject i.e. a subject. Now students will be able to read it as a language also. This will give a big boost to Indian Sign Language, will help our Divyang colleagues a lot.Talking about online education during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Modi said that the youth of this country helped in the popularization of online education. “The youth of 21st century wants exposure, they do not want to remain chained,” he said.Â

The NEP, 2020 is the guiding philosophy for changing the learning landscape, making education holistic for building strong foundations for an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The NEP 2020 replaces the thirty-four-year-old National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986. Built on the foundational pillars of Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability and Accountability, this policy is aligned to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and aims to transform India into a vibrant knowledge society and global knowledge superpower by making both school and college education more holistic, flexible, multidisciplinary, suited to 21st century needs and aimed at bringing out the unique capabilities of each student.
The Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was also present on the occasion. Pradhan said that the new education policy prepares Indian youth to be flag-bearers of education in the world.
