Placement, thesis pressure made IIT Hyderabad student die by suicide: Police

Placement and thesis pressure made the MTech student Rahul Bingumalla of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad take his life by suicide by hanging himself to the bed frame on August 31. Rahul was a native of Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh According to TOI, Sanga Reddy district police said that the pressure made the student die by suicide. The police also found a suicide note in his laptop, in which he wrote, he felt that the institute should not force students to complete the thesis. Rahul left a note in the room informing the he wrote a suicide note, which is in his laptop. He also referred to the alleged irregular payment of INR 12,000 stipend in this note.
While disclosing the contents of the suicide note, a senior officer from the district told, "If he is exhausted, he will do more research on suicide and ultimately his research will succeed. Because of this, I did smoking and drinking to come of pressure but I could not.”
The student claimed that "I am not interested to live because of placement pressure, thesis, future struggles in my job. I want to lead a simple life but now it seem to be a struggle for the next years. This Covid period, online made me lose confidence in me, which I have created in Btech to crack GATE to get into IIT. Here every day I feel pressure." Pressing that institute should not insist the student on doing a thesis and refer to IIIT-Bangalore which follows an alternative system. "Mostly students join MTech for placements, then why thesis? Colleges like IIIT-Bangalore provide alternatives to thesis like internship. Don't pressurise any student for a thesis," he said.
The investigation findings were explained to Rahul’s parents On Monday by Sanga Reddy district superintendent of police M Ramana Kumar. The police declared that Rahul's death is due to suicide.
