Pune Universities to draft online courses for International students

Universities in Pune are planning to reach out to foreign students through online classes and by conducting the semester online until the coronavirus situation in the country becomes normal.

Universities in Pune have told the foreign students studying with them to stay at their home as they are preparing a framework to start the semester online and possibly the whole year.

The universities however have to finalize the mode of assessment and get approval from the regulatory body.

Kirti Mahajan, Director, International Students’ Cell Bharati Vidyapeeth (deemed-to-be-university) said that “For International students, the university is planning to hold the entire semester online. All rules and regulations have to be framed and approved by the government bodies within the university like the Board of studies. If the coronavirus situation remains grim, the university may extend the online classes to another semester as heath of the students is the first priority.”

As per the record, the number of foreign students comping to Pune has declined from 1,804 in 2,016 to 1,449 in 2,018-19. With the coronavirus outbreak, it is expected that it will affect the number.

An official from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) said that this year the university is expecting a 20 percent drop in admissions of international students due to the pandemic.

Bharati Vidyapeeth University had 581 students in 2,016-17 but in 2,019-20 the number declined to 453. From 859 students in 2,016-17, the number came down to 610 in SPPU in 2,019-20.

While commenting on the admissions this year, Vidya Yeravedkar, Principal Director, Symbiosis Society, said that the coronavirus situation is expected to affect the admission of international students in the universities. The university is planning to convert the first semester into an online semester so that international students can come to University in Pune in the second semester.
